WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMANENT MAKEUP AND CLASSIC TATTOOING?
Dec 21st 2021
What do permanent makeup and tattooing have in common?
There are many common factors between permanent makeup (PMU) and tattooing. Both methods use a needle to insert color pigments underneath the skin. You can expect long-lasting results with both tattooing and PMU.
How is permanent makeup different from a regular tattoo?
The main difference between PMU and a regular tattoo is how deeply the pigment is inserted. Generally, the PMU technique involves inserting the pigment into the dermis, the thick layer of tissue just under the epidermis.
On the other hand, a regular tattoo goes deeper into the subcutaneous tissue where the pigments are inserted in between fat cells. Because of their deeper placement, a conventional tattoo can be expected to last longer than permanent makeup.
Is PMU just a simpler smaller tattoo?
Both beauticians and tattoo artists can specialize in permanent makeup. While PMU is considered a form of tattooing, it differs in that it is a unique technique reserved for coloring certain parts of the face like lips, eyelids, and eyebrows. These are particularly sensitive areas.
In Europe, tattoos and permanent makeup are subject to the same regulations. The regulations on pigments are currently in the process of being harmonized throughout the European Union through controversial REACH Regulation.
What kind of makeup can be permanent?
Just about any makeup that you can think of can also be done as PMU. Whether you are looking for lip pigments, eyeliner pigments, eyebrow pigments, pigments for moles/freckles, or beyond Quantum has an option! All you have to do is choose the right color. Quantum carries an array of permanent makeup pigments from pinks and reds for lips, browns and blondes for eyebrows, or darker hues for eyeliner. We even carry skin tones, camouflage, and color correctors for more challenging requirements.
How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last?
How long your permanent makeup will last can vary based on the shade, brand formulation, and other factors like sun exposure. While most colors last about three to five years, some can last as long as ten years! We highly recommend periodic touch-ups to ensure optimal results.
Because PMU pigments are only deposited about one-third as deep as regular tattoo ink, the colors will be softer. Additionally, permanent makeup pigments are designed to fade slowly over time. However, using only the highest quality PMU pigments will keep you looking perfect longer.
